Description | 2-Methyl-2-adamantyl methacrylate is an aliphatic hydrocarbon with a trifluoromethyl group . It is a monomer that can be used to make polymers. These materials have excellent thermal resistance, chemical resistance and mechanical strength. |
Synthesis |
The synthesis of 2-Methyl-2-adamantylmethacrylate is as follows:Add 3546ml of n-heptane in the 5L four-necked flask equipped with stirring paddle, condenser tube and thermometer, turn on stirring, add 126.3g of 2-methyladamantanol to the system, and slowly add 0.022g polymerization inhibitor tetrachlorobenzoquinone to the reaction, add 110.8g basic ion exchange resin, adjust pH=7-8, cool down to -13°C, slowly add 110.8g vinyl methacrylate dropwise to the reaction system, keep the reaction for 7h, monitor the reaction progress, and take samples for detection After the reaction was completed, 1000 ml of water was added to the reaction system, and the mixture was stirred and extracted for phase separation. The organic phase was dried, concentrated under reduced pressure and evaporated to dryness to obtain 167 g of 2-methyl-2-adamantyl methacrylate product with a yield of 93.78%. |

A series of copolymers with an adamantyl side group (poly(NIPAM-co-AdMA) and poly(DMAM-co-AdMA)) were prepared by radical copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and N,N-dimethylacrylamide (DMAM) with a 2-methyl-2-adamantylmethacrylate (AdMA) monomer. The structure and composition of the as-synthesized copolymers were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and elemental analysis.
The phototransparency and water vapor sorption properties of ABA-type triblock copolymer membranes derived from 4,4-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride-2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine (PI) and poly(2-methyl-2-adamantylmethacrylate) (PMAdMA) were investigated, with focus on the effect of the adamantane component. The phototransparency of PMAdMA-block-PI-block-PMAdMA [Block(PI/PMAdMA)] was about 10–20% higher than that of poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-PI-block-Poly(methylmethacrylate) [Block(PI/PMMA)] because the high symmetric structure of adamantane inhibited photoabsorbance.
